Chandigarh:Launching a crackdown on drug peddlers in Chandigarh, Special Investigation Team (SIT) has so far identified 34 persons.
Other than this, SIT formed by Chandigarh Police following the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, has also identified few places in the city where drugs are being sold.
The comprehensive list prepared by police have 15 drug peddlers in it who have been selling drugs in the city and have NDPS cases registered against them in the past. A few names also figured among the 34 persons whose names were revealed by inmates at de-addiction centres.
According to the sources, members of the SIT recently visited de-addiction centres in the city and interacted with inmates to identify the people who have been selling drugs to them.
The SIT comprises of UT police on January 30 comprising one Inspector, three Sub-Inspectors and one woman cop. The report has come up with findings that sale of drugs is rampant especially in the slum areas of city, including village Dhanas and Milk colony, Dadu Majra Colony, Sector 38 (West), Sector 56, Bapu Dham Colony, Mani Majra town, and Mauli Jagran.
Large number of drug peddlers identified by police are staying in Sector 22 and in Mani Majra. Few of the persons among the list of 34 are from Burail, Mani Majra, Dadu Majra Colony, Sector 20, 22, 38 and other nearby areas.The SIT has also found that drug suppliers source drugs from Nigerians based in Delhi.
