Congress fields woman team; Kamla Sharma designated convene Mayoral elections
Chandigarh: Showing their trust on old timers and experienced councillors, the BJP fielded the two-time councillors Asha Jaswal for the office of Mayor, Rajesh Gupta for Senior Deputy Mayor and Anil Kumar Dubey for Deputy Mayor’s post.
Asha Jaswal and Rajesh Gupta are from the Sanjay Tandon group, whereas Anil Kumar Dubey is from Harmohan Dhawan loyalists. No one from the Kirron Kher group finds place in the top three posts.
Asha Kumari Jaswal filed her nomination papers to contest for the Mayor’s post, Rajesh Kumar Gupta filed papers for the post of Senior Deputy Mayor and Anil Kumar Dubey for Deputy Mayor.
Congress fielded an all-woman team to lead the house. The nominations were filed in the office of MC Joint Commissioner-cum-Secretary Manoj Khatri on Saturday.
Asha Kumari Jaswal flied her three sets of nomination papers. Her name was proposed by outgoing Mayor Arun Sood and seconded by Raj Bala Mallik in the first set. In her second nomination, Rajesh Kumar had proposed her name and was seconded by Shakti Prasad Devshali, whereas in the third nomination her name was proposed by Farmila Devi and seconded by Ravi Kant.
After filing her nomination papers, Asha Kumari said, “We will change the working of the MC House and will make it more effective in which the focus will be on development instead of wasting time.”
Rajesh Kumar Gupta, again second-time councillor and former Deputy Mayor’s name was proposed by Arun Sood and seconded by Ravi Kant. In the second nomination his name was proposed by Devesh Maudgal and seconded by Shakti Devshali, whereas Raj Bala Mallik porposed his name in the third nomination papers and seconded by Satish Kainth.
For the post of Deputy Mayor, Anil Kumar Dubey, another second-time councillor’s name was proposed by Arun Sood and seconded by Raj Bala Mallik along with Devesh Maudgal, Farmila Devi, Satish Kainth and Hardeep Singh.
On the other hand, the minority opposition Congress fielded an all-woman team for the top three spots in the House. The Congress also reposed its faith in second timers like Gurbax Rawat for the post of Mayor, Sheila Phool Singh for the post of Senior Deputy Mayor and Ravinder Kaur Gujral for the post of Deputy Mayor.
All the Congress candidates were accompanied by former Union Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal, CTCC President Pardeep Chhabra, HS Lucky, but none of them proposed or seconded the names of candidates in filling papers. Devinder Babla proposed the name of Gurbax Rawat and Sheila Devi seconded. For Sheila Phool Singh, Gurbax Rawat prposed her name, whereas Ravinder Kaur seconded it and for Ravinder Kaur Gujral, Sheila Devi proposed her name and was seconded by Devinder Singh Babla.
Despite the fact of being in minority in the House, the major opposition Congress tends to contest elections with just four councillors. Gurbax Rawat said, “We have filed nominations to have competition. If not in majority still it is our fundamental right.”
