Five family members booked among bid murder woman
Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Police have booked five members of a family for their alleged involvement in burning a 50-year-old woman in Sector 20, Chandigarh, on Tuesday night. The accused belong to the in-laws’ family the victim, Amrita, said the police. The accused have been booked for an attempt to murder.
According to the police, the accused had been identified as Sarabjeet Singh, husband of Amrita, Gurpreet Singh, father-in-law, Satvinder Kaur, mother-in-law, Pinku, brother-in-law, all residents of Sector 20, Chandigarh, and Meet, a friend of the accused family.
Police sources said the accused were booked after the statement of the victim was recorded on Friday. The police team recorded the statements of the 50-year-old Rajni, who was allegedly set on fire after pouring petrol on her in Sector 20.
Maninder Singh, SHO, Police Station, Sector 19, said, “The victim was unconscious after the incident, however on Friday our team recorded her statement after she gained consciousness and as per the statement, the following legal action was taken concerning the matter.”
The accused have been booked under Section 307 (attempt to murder) at Police Station, Sector 19. The accused were absconding and efforts were being made to arrest them, said the SHO.
According to sources, Amrita, a resident of Housing Board flats, Sector 42, complained to the police that she had gone to her relatives’ house in Sector 20-C when they allegedly poured petrol on her and her aunt Rajni (50).
The complainant alleged that she somehow saved herself while her aunt was set on fire.
Police sources said that Amrita had levelled allegations against her relatives which were being verified. The police were informed about the incident and the victim was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32.
The sources said the victim suffered 40 per cent burn injuries. Police officials said Amrita was giving contradictory statements following which they were waiting for her aunt to get fit so that they could record her statement. “We are investigating the incident from all angles,” said a police official.
