Chandigarh:With the aim of tightening the noose around the illegal and unhygienic bakeries running in rural areas of the city, Food Safety and Standards Department Food Inspectors, in collaboration with SDM (East) Dr Tapasya Raghav of the Chandigarh Administration, have conducted raids on 19 bakeries during the past two months.
On Monday, under the drive started by Dr Tapasya Raghav to check illegal and unhygienic food units in Manimajra, a team of Food Safety Officer Baljinder Singh inspected a bakery making namkeens in Shastri Nagar, Manimajra. The factory was found running in unsanitised and unhygienic conditions and was challaned for the same.
A total of 5 quintals of namkeen found unfit for human consumption was destroyed. In addition to this, about 4 quintals of sweet confectionery articles found prepared in unhygienic conditions and stored in the residential premises were also destroyed during the drive.
Before that the officials found many illegal bakeries running in Manimajra, Daria village, Hallomajra, Raipur Khurd and the adjacent villages. All these bakeries used to run without a valid licence and also were found to make bakery items in unhygienic conditions.
On March 6, the food officials had conducted a raid on bakeries running in Daria and Gobindpura, Manimajra, during the raid. The officials had destroyed two quintals of bakeries items made in unhygienic conditions on the spot.
On April 11, a raid was conducted by the team of Food Safety Officer Baljinder Singh on bakeries and biscuit units in Raipur Khurd village. During the drive, a bakery was challaned for running its operations in unhygienic and unsanitised conditions and approximately 10 kg of rusks were destroyed.
