Chandigarh:Get ready to pay entry tax on commercial vehicles in the form of toll tax per entry basis. The agenda point to tax all the commercial vehicles registered outside Chandigarh during entry into the city was unanimously passed by the House on Monday.
Now the Municipal Corporation will formulate the policy to tax the vehicles as agenda point proposed on the basis of Delhi pattern has been approved. A toll tax of Rs 100 per entry has been proposed for various taxis, cabs, tempos, Tata-407 and other similar vehicles. Buses, trucks, Canters and other such vehicles will have to pay Rs 200 per entry. Similarly, six-wheeler trucks are to pay Rs 400 per entry, 10-wheelers Rs 800 per entry and 14-wheelers will have to pay Rs 2,000 per entry.
However, despite their efforts to oppose the agenda, Congress Councillors were cornered by the BJP to clear the agenda point. Congress Councillor Devinder Singh Babla said, “We have opposed the agenda as taxing the commercial vehicles at entry into city will directly affect the cost of household consumables. They may be hiked. As we are in minority we had no other option but to pass the agenda point.”
Municipal Commissioner Baldeo Purushartha said that finding alternate sources of generating revenue for the MC was strictly required, otherwise under the present scenario, the MC could only incur routine expenses like salary and maintenance and had no revenue left for development.
