Poor people deprived of ‘sabzi’ for `10; fleece by distributor
Chandigarh: The Annapurna Akshaypatra Yojana, affordable, hygienic and nutritious food for the needy concept of Prime Minister Narendra Modi goes for a toss as the poor and the needy were fleeced by the distributor on day one of the launch of the scheme. The beneficiaries were deprived of complete food packets as the distributor refused to give “sabzi” along with “chapatis” for Rs 10.
The announcement of the implementation of the Annapurna Akshaypatra Yojana was made by UT Administrator-cum-Governor of Punjab V.P. Singh Badnore while flagging off the wagons to distribute the food for the needy at five different locations jointly with MP Kirron Kher on Tuesday from Karuna Sadan. The project is initiated by the Indian Red Cross Society, Chandigarh.
During the reality checks made at distribution spots outside Colony 4 and Grain Market, Sector 26, the Daily Post team discovered that the distributor at these two spots was fleecing the poor and the needy by not offering them ‘’sabzi’’ for Rs 10.
The attendant from the Red Cross Society, when questioned as to why the declared packets containing six “chapatis” along with pickle and vegetable for Rs 10 were not being given, reasoned that today double vegetable had been packed which was being given for Rs 20 a diet.
Daily-wagers like Manjit, Arun, Pankaj and Shripal said, “On the banner of the transport van it is written that they will provide six ‘chapatis’, pickle and vegetable for Rs 10, but here we are not getting the announced stuff for the said amount. The distributor is asking us to buy food for Rs 20 if we want vegetable, otherwise he is giving only ‘chaptis’ with pickle for Rs 10.”
When contacted, Adviser Primal Rai said, “This is astonishing. The instructions were very clear to distribute six ‘chapatis’ with pickle and vegetable for Rs 10. I will immediately get it checked.”
The matter was also conveyed to MP Kirron Kher and within 30 minutes of the information provided by Daily Post to the higher authorities, the action was taken and the distributor received fresh instructions to give vegetable along with “chapatis” for Rs 10.
However the people consuming the food appreciated quality of the food and said that it was very tasty and very much affordable in Rs10.
