Chandigarh:The Chandigarh Police have ushered in an era of drones which would help the city cops to keep watch not only on the anti-social elements but also will help eradicate the traffic snarls, but unfortunately the drones bought recently turn blind at night as these are without night vision features.
The drones will also be not in use of police on New Year Eve, say police sources. However, they said the drones would be used frequently to keep vigil over the city.
According to sources, the Chandigarh Police recently bought two drones aiming at getting a large view of the visitors in the area from a particular location and to keep vigil over the anti-social elements where the reach of cops is difficult, but the usage of drones is restricted only to day time and these are unable to record or catch the live video.
Sources said the two drones were purchased recently by the Chandigarh Police at Rs 3 lakh after these were used during the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to keep vigil over the mega event of international yoga which was conducted in Capitol Complex in June this year. After the successful testing of the drones on yoga, the administration gave a green signal to purchase the drones for the police.
According to police sources, the drones were planned to be purchased four years back, but since the price was more than Rs 12 lakh at that time, the administration dropped the idea.
However, after four years, the Chandigarh Police, after floating tenders, purchased two drones at Rs 3 lakh.
The Chandigarh Police have been using drones in the city during the festive season as well. The policemen have been trained to use drones and these were used at the Sectors 22 and 17 markets and also at the Sukna Lake.Meanwhile, the usage of drone is limited to day time as these do not have night vision features.
