Chandigarh:Hostel registration and allotment process in Panjab University (PU) will be online from the next academic session of 2017-18. The complete process is at the planning stage and a committee is taking care of the process.
“Students will be admitted online and the whole process is at the planning stage,” informed Dean Student Welfare Emanuel Nahar. He said that the accommodation would be allocated according to the strength and requirement of each department.
Many students feel that some individuals get accommodation disregarding the merit. “The system will be bringing transparency in the allotment. The allotment will be on merit and the per cent of the students would be visible in the list,” said Nahar. For getting a room, a student has to contact the department rather than the Dean Student Welfare.
“The process of registration will be the same but only the method of applying will change,” said Nahar. A link to the website of PU is at the preparation stage.
The DSW also said that the university was facing a severe shortage of hostel rooms. “We are trying to provide single rooms to the final year students and scholars, but more than one student of the first and second years are being accommodated in a single room,” he said. He informed that the shortage was acute in the girls hostels.
The hostels also suffer from an adequate parking space. There have been a buzz about restricting vehicles of new hostellers from the next session. “The buzz has been for quite some years but no major decision has been taken on it,” said Nahar.
The parking committee headed by the Registrar was in charge of the issue. “If the committee takes any decision in this regard, we will follow it,” added Nahar.
