Chandigarh: With the joining of General J J Singh (retd) Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is upbeat in the state especially in Patiala from where he will contest the Assembly election.
Talking to a cross- section of SAD workers in Patiala reveals that all the groups within the party have joined hands to chalk out a strategy to campaign for the General. He is pitched against Congress heavy weight Captain Amarinder Singh, former Chief Minister and the present PPCC chief.SAD district president Surjit Singh Kohli said that they were conducting meetings at the ward level which will follow with meetings at the booth level to rejuvenate the electioneering.
Municipal Corporation mayor Amarinder Singh Bajaj said that he would ensure that the General gains huge winning margin in each booth of the city. Vishnu Sharma, Harpal Juneja and others had come forward to support the SAD candidate. Earlier, Juneja was the front runner for the Akali ticket, but had now reconciled with the decision of the party high command.
Kohli said that for the last 10 years the party had provided them with various enjoyable moments and had been executing decision at their recommendations, now was the time to make the party victorious. He said that the General was born and brought up in Patiala and had knowledge of the Guru Ghar and Gurbani. A devout Sikh, the General had blessings of the almighty, he added.
It was the General himself who contacted SAD president Sukhbir Badal expressing his desire to contest against Captain Amarinder Singh. The party accepted his demand and allotted him a ticket from Patiala (city) constituency. Another General V.K. Singh (retd) hailing from Haryana had joined the BJP and was now a minister of state in the Union Cabinet. General JJ Singh was earlier a Governor of Arunachal Pradesh. He was the first Sikh to become the General of the Army.
