Jalandhar: The much delayed project of Northern India Institute of Fashion Technology (NIIFT) Jalandhar is all set to commence as Punjab Government has released the pending amount of Rs 4 crore for construction activity.
An ambitious project of the Department of Industries, its construction is being done by the Punjab State Industries and Export Corporation (PSIEC). The project has been hanging in balance for the last eight years.
Jalandhar Central MLA Rajinder Beri, who convened a meeting of the NIIFT authorities and the industrialists on Monday, said that the PSIEC has already spent Rs 8 crore on the building construction. “We have got sanctioned an amount to the tune of Rs 4 crore to complete the pending construction of NIIFT Jalandhar. The work would begin within next 15-days”, he said.
A major demand of the industrialists and the a meeting residents of Guru Gobind Singh Avenue, the foundation stone of NIIFT was laid by the then Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in the year 2009. However, the institute instead of becoming a leading name in providing latest technology and courses to students ended up becoming a safe heaven for anti social elements in the area.
It is pertinent to mention here that the then Finance Minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa had announced Rs 3 crore fund for the completion of the project in the budget speech last year.
The total cost of this project was Rs 20 crore, which has its front building architecture in the shape of two shoes. In the absence of regular flow of funds, the NIIFT project ended up becoming a major eyesore.
It has also been learnt that with the passage of time, even the students preferred to take admission in NIIFT Mohali or Ludhiana campus, as the temporary Jalandhar campus was lacking in facilities.
