Ludhiana: Due to high booking of the consignments of the outward parcels booked by the manufacturers and traders for being transported to the different parts of country, blockage prevails at the railway parcel office despite the fact extra coaches were placed on certain trains other than goods train.
As the thousands of such packages lie scattered all over local railway station from around a week. The slow movement of parcels is due to the shortage of the vans on certain routes due to these being given on long lease to contractors by the Northern Railways. The number of parcels lying in heaps or scattered outside parcel office are either dumped by contractors for loading in their leased wagons, or else the consignors are waiting for the backlog of booked packages to be cleared there.
The Station Superintendent, Ludhiana, Ashok Salaria admits that there was acute shortage of the parcel vans, used for the transportation of goods through passenger, express or mail trains. He further said that the movement of the parcels booked for the stations like Lucknow, Bareilly, Moradabad on the Amritsar-Howrah section is slow due to shortage of wagons, which could be attached to trains on this route.
The demand for at least half a dozen additional parcel vans have been forwarded to divisional headquarters of the Northern Railway will help clear the backlog and in turn speeding up the fresh booking. He further assured that soon backlog would be cleared at the Ludhiana Railway Station as now special trains would also run and they can attach coaches behind them also in the summers. As in the winters backlog starts, but in summers this backlog gets clear. He further said that this problem would be over fully when the special track for this purpose would complete from Ludhiana to Kolkata.
