Jalandhar:Amidst chorus of ouster of Delhi leaders Sanjay Singh and Durgesh Pathak from Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Monday accepted that ‘over enthusiasm coupled with Delhi leaders handling Punjab affairs and not projecting the Chief Ministerial candidate led to the humiliating defeat of their party in assembly elections 2017.
The AAP leaders said that accepting the unanimous sentiment of volunteers, the party has decided that only a Punjabi would lead AAP affairs in the state. They also maintained that AAP candidates were not as ‘seasoned’ as Congress leaders, hence they managed to influence the voters and took the benefit of the negative campaign against the SAD-BJP government.
AAP state convener Gurpreet Singh Ghuggi shared these thoughts after a state level meeting held in Jalandhar to ascertain the reasons behind their defeat. Ghuggi said that the minutes of the meeting would be tabled before the Political Affairs Committee (PAC), where the need for restructuring the Punjab AAP unit would also be raised.
Sources maintained that during the closed-door meeting of candidates and the AAP state leaders, volunteers demanded that ‘arrogant leaders’ Sanjay Singh and Durgesh Pathak should be kept away from AAP Punjab. “It is must that Punjabis were allowed to run the AAP affairs in the state”, they demanded.
Talking to the media, Gurpreet Singh Ghuggi said that corrective measures would be taken to overcome the shortcomings, which were raised in the meeting on Monday. “The need for reorganising the AAP state unit would also be taken before the PAC. Though we worked hard but failed to win but is it not a matter of pride that a rookie party within three years of its working was the main opposition in Punjab Vidhan Sabha,” he asked.
Ghuggi also said that the party accepts people’s mandate but can’t blame any individual for the defeat. “It was a collective work and the entire party takes the blame of the defeat,” he said while defending Sanjay Singh and Durgesh Pathak.
“After all both Sanjay and Durgesh had come to Punjab to ensure AAP’s victory. We can’t blame them alone for the party’s defeat. Rather AAP Punjab was an autonomous body and the duo never interfered in its functionin,” he
To a query that Sanjay Singh was seen making fun of Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann in a video which went viral recently, Ghuggi defended him and said, “There was nothing wrong in the video. It was recorded when Sanjay Singh was sharing some light moments over the mobile with Bhagwant Mann only. Sanjay was asking Bhagwant to mimic Arvind Kejriwal but the video was leaked by somebody to the media.”
