Congress pleases Aggarwal community, who had earlier announced to boycott Congress not only in Jalandhar but entire state
Jalandhar: Fearing stiff opposition, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Friday changed the candidature of Tajinder Singh Bittu and finally fielded Raj Kumar Gupta from Jalandhar North assembly constituency.
The Congress high command had on Thursday fielded Bittu from Jalandhar North seat but seeing a strong opposition from senior Congress leader Avtar Singh Henry and then Raj Kumar Gupta’s supporters, the party took a U-turn.
An elated Raj Kumar Gupta accompanied by party workers was seen celebrating the moment on the festive occasion of Lohri, as his supporters were miffed with the congress for ignoring him.
Thanking, the Congress high command for fielding him from Jalandhar North seat, Gupta said that he was glad that the party considered his merit. “My supporters are happy that finally I have been allotted the seat. The Congress has already promised me the Jalandhar North seat, after senior Congress leader Avtar Singh Henry’s vote was deleted recently,” he said.
It is pertinent to mention here that earlier on Friday morning, Gupta held a show of strength, where his supporters had openly announced to boycott the Congress in the assembly elections 2017.
Though Raj Kumar Gupta had claimed that he was with the Congress, his supporters strongly rejected the candidature of Tajinder Singh Bittu. They announced that the entire ‘Aggarwal community’ in the state would oppose the Congress.
Gupta’s supporters not only lashed out at the Congress for repeating old mistakes of 2007 and 2012 assembly elections but also maintained that the party would witness the same result this time too.
Notably, Gupta had applied from Jalandhar Central assembly segment from where he remained an MLA in the 2002 Congress government. Though he was seeking a ticket from Jalandhar Central but the Congress fielded Rajinder Beri.
