Ludhiana:Already entangled in controversy, the elections for the post of President of District Bar Association (DBA) left the lawyers in confusion on Friday.
Newly elected Vice President of District Bar Association Harjot Singh Harikay has fixed the date of election of President DBA on Jan 9, 2017 without opinion of General House. The Vice president of DBA has called General House meet of DBA on January 2, 2017.
However, the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana has directed to conduct elections on January 3, 2017 after cancellation of candidature of Parupkar Singh Ghuman for the post of president.
On Friday, during the winter vacations, Emergency General House meeting was called by newly elected Vice President DBA regarding the order of Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana to hold fresh election of President of DBA on January 3, 2016.
In meeting, Vice President Harikay listened the suggestions of lawyers present in the meeting. But after the meeting was over Harikay declared to hold election of President DBA on January 9, 2017 without democratic opinion of General House and also further called the General House Meeting on January 2, 2017. According to Harikay, Bar Council was intimated about change of date of election of President DBA. Approximately more than one hundred lawyers attended the General House Meeting.
It is pertinent to mention here that election of DBA was held on December 22, 2016 for all posts. But the candidate for the post of president Naginder Singh Gora has challenged the candidature of Parupkar Singh Ghuman for the post of President on the ground that he is ineligible to contest election in DBA Ludhiana. Election Committee of Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana cancelled the candidature of Ghuman and further ordered the newly elected Vice President Harikay to conduct election of President DBA on January 3, 2017. On the other hand, Ghuman has challenged the order of Election Committee of Bar Council of Punjab in High Court.
