Pay service charge ; own discretion
Ludhiana: Service charge is a charge paying for the services given to the customers at hotels and city cafes. The recent declaration by the Government says that if the customers are not satisfied with the services offered to him then they need not to pay the service charged to them.
Is the service charge you are paying justified? It is just an over head addition to our pocket in terms of service charge. Getting in lieu service charge is just a cut to common man’s pocket, first with the high rates then with these extra charges.
No doubt State Governments have been asked to ensure the city hotels and restaurants to be made aware of the new policies regarding the service charge and they must also ensure that the notices must be put up by informing the customers that service charge is discretionary and can be waived for an unhappy customer.
Khushdeep Joshi, Manager at Ghanta Ghar said, “At this restaurant we are having very experienced staff and all of them are having MBA degrees and we try our best to give the good services to the customers and if there is any problem in the service offered by our staff we will make sure not to charge the service charge.”
Managing Director Brig Surinder Singh Gill at Bistro said, “Yes, it’s normal practice to charge between 10- 20 % Service Charge on the base bill before taxes. At BISTRO 226 we are charging @ 10 % of base bill before taxes.
Guest if not satisfied is at liberty of not paying. Charges collected are passed on to the complete staff. We insist on quality food and excellent service. If a guest is not satisfied we do not even charge as a courtesy for not living up to his satisfaction.”
Harjinder Singh Kukreja owner at Yellow Chilly and Belfrance shared, “We never charge any service charge at our hotel and restaurant. We always want customers’ satisfaction and if they are not happy with the services then we even don’t charge them. We are against charging this service charge. It’s our duty to give the best services.”
Amarvir Singh, Vice President of Hotel and Restaurant Association of Northern India said, “I agree with the decision taken by the Government regarding the service charge.
We don’t force customers to pay the service charge and it is completely on them whether they like the services or not. And if they really like the services then they pay the service charge.”
