Patiala: Strange it may sound, Bhai Kahan Singh library set up in the memory of famous writer and Sikh Intellectual, is in complete shambles. The library has become the worst example of administration lethargy and is running without a librarian from last 2 decades.
The knowledge centre is being taken care of by sweeper. Earlier the library was housed in the premises of Old Fort here and in its hey- days many locals visited it.
According to official records regular librarian demitted his office in 1996, and after that it was run by library restorer who too retired in 2014. Despite being sanctioned one Librarian, one Library restorer and two peons, the knowledge hub is going through its worst phase.
In the year 2005, Chief Minister, Parkash Singh Badal laid the foundation stone of Bhai Kahan Singh Library near to newly constructed Tehsil Complex. However, locals rued about the distance they had cover as it over 3 km.
Numbers of visitors have started to go down as senior citizens find it difficult to cover such a distance of 3 km. The library has a stock of over 50,000 books out of which 5,000 are rare books. The current scenario is such that one sweeper opens it only on Thursday. Whereas Late Kahan Singh Nabha’s grandson , Major AP Singh has urged the administration to take appropriate steps to improve the standard of this library as it carries the name of his grandfather.
