Patiala: After failing in getting any proper response from President Pranab Mukherjee on the issue of Balwant Singh Rajoana’s clemency plea, for which it waited more than three months, now it has decided to take up the issue with the Union Home Minister to get relief not only for Rajoana, who is facing the gallows in former Chief Minister Beant Singh’s assassination case and is lodged in the Central Jail here, but also concerning Sikhs detained in various jails since long.
It may be mentioned here that SGPC moved an application before the President seeking clemency for Rajoana a long time ago, but it failed to find any attention. In November last year, Rajoana started an indefinite hunger strike in the Central jail here during which he lost about 10 kg in weight. As his condition worsened, SGPC chief Prof Kirpal Singh Badungar intervened in the matter and, at that time, assured Rajoana that SGPC would take up his matter with the President and get the result as early as possible and on such assurances Rajoana broke his hunger strike. After that, the SGPC chief again sent a letter to the President and sought time to meet him concerning the matter.
Speaking over the development, SGPC chief Prof Kirpal Singh Badungar told Daily Post on Wednesday evening that the appeal made to the President failed to evoke any response so far as whenever they contacted the President’s office, they were told that the President was very busy. He further said that they can understand well that as the President would be demitting his office shortly in July, so it was obvious that he would find himself preoccupied with other engagements as well.
When asked what next action SGPC had planned concerning these issues, he said that as they feel that it’s not simple and easy to approach and meet the President of the country, so now the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee had decided to approach the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh concerning these issues.
