Belonging to a family of Freedom fighters, senior Congress candidate form Mohali assembly constituency Balbir Singh Sidhu, is trying his luck from here for the fourth time in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha election 2017. He will face bureaucrat-turned-politician T P S Sidhu, a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), candidates from here in the elections. T P S Sidhu is a son-in-law of Sukhdev Dhindsa, SAD general secretary and had served as a Deputy Commissioner, in Mohali.
A businessman by profession, Balbir Singh Sidhu has his roots deep in the constituency. He is having a wide social circle. Sidhu has solemnised mass marriage programs of 101 poor and deserving girls of Mohali district besides helping many poor boys and girls for pursuing their studies apart from providing them uniforms, books, shoes and other commodities.
After passing his Bachelor in Arts (II) from Punjabi University, Patiala, Sidhu joined Youth Congress in 1993. He contested Punjab Vidhan Sabha election in 1997 as a Congress candidate.
A three-time MLA Sidhu, successfully contested from Kharar seat in 2007 Vidhan Sabha election by defeating Jasjeet Singh Bunny, son of former Punjab Finance Minister late Capt Kanwaljit Singh, by 14,000 votes.
He contested from Mohali seat (after delimitation in 2012) and marked a major victory by defeating prominent former Union Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) stalwart Balwant Singh Ramoowalia, with huge margin of 17,000 votes.
He is amongst the first five MLA’s who participated in the maximum proceedings of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha.
Sidhu has remained in the Opposition for two terms, which is a major constraint in getting work done in his segment. But, owing to his work and connect at the grassroots in Mohali, he has not got much flak for lack of development.
