Chandigarh: Division in the Haryana Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to the fore on the SYL Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal digging issue with a party MLA from Ambala organising a ‘dudh-jalebi’ langar for Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) leaders and workers adjacent to their agitation site while the other leaders criticised the INLD leadership, on
BJP leader Aseem Goyal, MLA from Ambala, had set up stalls of ‘dudh-jalebi’ for the INLD protesters who had come from far-flung areas to join the INLD’s ‘Jal Yudh Sammelan’ on Thursday.
Goyal was also seen welcoming the INLD’s protesters. Goyal said that dudh-jalebi was a Haryanvi traditional ‘energy drink.’
According to reports, Goyal claims that the INLD was fighting a war for water. “The purpose of offering ‘dudh and jalebis’ was to provide energy to the protesters,” he said. Goyal also claimed that general public is well aware of the fact that the INLD was trying to take political gains by organising the SYL canal digging march.
According to Ambala residents, Goyal had even performed Yagna for the success of the ‘Jal Yudh Sammelan’.
On the other hand, senior Haryana BJP leader and state Health Minister Anil Vij has that the INLD was inciting the people to undertake digging of the SYL Canal to interrupt implementation of the Supreme Court’s verdict in favour of Haryana.
He said that the BJP-led Haryana government had presented a strong case for construction of the SYL Canal in the Apex Court, which paved the way for giving the water to the people of Haryana by giving its verdict in Haryana’s favour.
Vij said that the step taken by the INLD was not in the interests of the people Haryana and was more likely to harm the state. The INLD was not just trying to vitiate the atmosphere in the state, but was also making a mockery of serious issues, he said.
“I will felicitate the INLD if they are successful in getting water through such acts,” claimed Vij.
Meanwhile, Nayab Singh, Labour and Employment Minister, Haryana, accused the INLD for misleading people of the state on the issue or its vested political interests. He said that previous governments had also misled the people on this issue. Singh said that the INLD wanted to weaken Haryana’s stand on the issue in the Supreme Court.
“In 1977, Chaudhary Devi Lal had first put the issue on the backburner. In 1999, his son Om Prakash Chautala, as the Chief Minister, spoke in favour of Punjab instead of properly presenting the case in favour of Haryana in the court,” claimed Nayab Singh.
BJP’s Ambala MLA Goyal was also seen welcoming INLD’s protesters to partake in
Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) MP and president of the Youth Wing of INLD gave a miss to the protest organised by the party to start digging the SYL Canal on the interstate border in Ambala. Dushyant Chautala, MP and Digvijay Singh Chautala, chief of the youth wing of the party, remained missing from the protest (Jal Yudh Sammelan) thus exposing differences in the Chautala family. This also gave a chance to other Haryana political parties to take a dig at the party leadership.
