Chandigarh:A major fire broke out at the garbage dumping ground at Dadu Majra on Monday evening. The fire flames engulfed the entire area, leading to a problem in breathing for not only the residents of Dadu Mjara but also for the commuters who were commuting from the road leading from the Sectors 25-38 roundabout to Dhanas.
Later in the evening, the Fire Department had deployed around 10 fire tenders to control the fire. The tenders were still trying to control the fire till filing of this report.
Meanwhile, the area residents accused the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation of its failure to find a permanent solution to fire incidents which occurr at the dumping ground repeatedly.
Smoke could be seen rising from the dumping ground at about 4:30 pm, local residents said. Soon a fire tender arrived on the spot and left after extinguishing the fire. The smoke did not stop and the fire spread to the bottom of the pile of dry waste, followed by a day-long experience of battling with the irritating and unhealthy smoke. Soon, the smoke spread to the adjoining residential areas in Sectors 37, 38 and 38 (West).
“One can imagine the plight of the residents of Dadu Majra as from ages we are living near the dumping ground and every year before summers starts the incidents of fire which add to our miseries,” said Devinder, a senior citizen of Sector 38 (West).
“We have been protesting against the dumping ground in the vicinity of the residential area for the past several years, but the Administration has not paid any heed to the grievances of the people. Instead,
the Administration has extended the existing area and is also setting up a garbage treatment plant in the area,” said another resident Sushma, whose house is just next to the dumping
ground’s boundary wall.
