MC started process of distributing free dustbins to residents in two colours. World Environment Day on June 5 and Municipal Corporation here had launched the segregation of waste with much fanfare. Project is yet to gain momentum in the city. The residents, as well as the garbage collectors, are going on with the old system of dumping dry waste and wet waste together.The municipal corporation had to residents in two colours – green for wet waste and blue for dry waste. Every day between 100 and 200 are being handed over to the sanitary inspectors and councillors for further distribution. In all 15,000 bins were procured initially, and out of that around 2,000 are left.An MC official says the current focus is on distribution of the bins for segregation of waste. After that they will lay stress on segregation of waste at source. The official added the bins are being handed over to the residents, proper register is maintained and a picture is clicked to keep record. This exercise is expected to get over by mid-July.While the MC is laying focus on distributing dustbins, the garbage is being disposed of by the residents in just one bin. Even the garbage collector is not stressing on segregation of waste. The MC also plans to impose fine in the coming months if garbage is found dumped in residential and commercial areas. A fine of Rs 5,000 will be imposed on people for dumping garbage in residential area and Rs 10,000 in commercial area.
