Seven West Bengal municipalities will be voting in new representatives in local body polls scheduled for today. Polls will be held in four municipalities in the northern Bengal hills — Darjeeling, Kurseong and Mirik Notified Area Authority in Darjeeling district and Kalimpong in the newly formed Kalimpong district.In North Bengal, until now Trinamool has won only with the local factional support from parties including the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha. BJP national chief Amit Shah had earlier pitched for making inroads in eastern Indian states like West Bengal and Odisha. His recent visit to north West Bengal had highlighted the importance the party was giving to the municipal elections in the state.The TMC, on the other hand, is confident that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee repeated visit to the hills will be able to swing votes in its favour.
Other parties in the fray include Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF), Jana Andolan Party (JAP), and Communist Party of India Marxist (CPIM).
