Lambi (Muktsar):On the first day of his thanksgiving tour, former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on Wednesday asked the Akali cadre to gird up loins to fight the Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) canal battle, which he could foresee as inevitable.
Reiterating the commitment of the SAD-BJP alliance, Badal said: “During our regime, we took historic steps in this regard. We not only denotified the land acquired for the SYL canal but also returned to the original owners, completing all legal and procedural processes.”
“But as I can foresee now, the issue is all set to reappear before the state. Though we are not in power now, I reaffirm that the Akali cadre would go to any extent, be it sacrificing of lives, but won’t allow the digging of the canal as it would snatch our waters from us,” said Badal.
Claiming to have no faith in the upcoming Congress government, as he blamed the senior Congress leaders for the carving of the SYL in past, Badal said: “Be it the issue of Punjabi-speaking areas, Capital of the state or any other of serious nature, it was the Akali Dal that always fought the battle from the front. So, realising our duty, we are again committed to save the state from water loss.”
“So in this battle, I appeal all of you to get ready for making sacrifices as it is for our coming generations,” urged Badal, with a mention that he would be leading the cadre from the front.
Further, the SAD patriarch attempted to boost the morale of his party cadre, saying: “The Congress and the AAP tried their best to make me and Sukhbir lose the elections and for the purpose they fielded their heaviest weights against us. But, we thank the voters, who foiled their bids and gave mandate in our favour.”
“Now, the game of the Congress will be over within months as people will themselves see that the promises they made with voters to woo them were all bogus. As there are huge flaws in their manifesto, I can firmly state that the Congress government won’t be able to fulfill even half of their commitments,” said Badal.
He asked the cadre to remain upbeat, stating that after a short change, people would again hand over the reign to SAD-BJP alliance to run the state.
‘Modi, Harsimrat and bureaucrats are ours’
Former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal played with the words to encourage the cadre during his thanksgiving tour, as he said: “In the past 20 years, the SAD-BJP alliance has ruled the state for 15 years. The bureaucracy is all with us as the officers have worked with us in congenial atmosphere for couple of years. So, you need not worrying about the impact of the change of guard. Further, we have strong bonding with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ministers in his cabinet. And one of the ministers in Union cabinet-Harsimrat Kaur Badal-is our own family member. They would all stand for us in this period,” Badal stated in a loud voice.
‘Bhagwant is a drunkard’
Former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, who usually avoid direct target on his rivals, lambasted the AAP MP Bhagwnat Mann, who unsuccessfully fought Vidhan Sabha battle against Sukhbir Singh Badal from Jalalabad assembly constituency, as he said: “Bhagwant consumes two bottles of liquor a day. Under such circumstances, how could he even think of winning the polls? If he himself can’t stand on his legs, how would he make the state grow in any
‘I can’t take rest’
The 89-year-old former chief minister, while holding the thanksgiving tour of Lambi assembly constituency, said: “After the poll results, I was asked to take rest for a while but it is against my nature. I can’t sit idle. Moreover, it is the duty of every candidate, even if one loses the poll battle, to visit the voters and thank them for their support.”
