Hoshiarpur:After getting a cold shoulder from Punjab government, blatant lack of security by Hoshiarpur Police forced Canadian Defence Minister Harjit Singh Sajjan to change his schedule at the last moment, following which he did not address the villagers at Gurdwara Singh Sabha in his native village Bambeli on Thursday afternoon.
This was Sajjan’s maiden visit to Punjab after becoming Defence Minister of Canada. No district administration officer was present to receive Sajjan. Capt Amarinder has already declared that as Sajjan was a ‘Khalistani Sympathiser’, he would not meet him.
Various Sikh organisations including SAD (Amritsar), Sikh Welfare Society and All India Saini Sewa Samaj, Punjab had made elaborate arrangements to honour the minister but noticing a weak police security cover, he preferred to rush home with his family.
Sajjan also paid obeisance at Gurdwara Singh Sabha, where he was offered ‘Siropa’ by the management.
While rushing home with his team of officers from Canada, Sajjan maintained a distance from the villagers and did not even come out of his vehicle to greet anybody.
The Canadian minister’s elderly parents Kundan Singh Sajjan and his mother Vidya Kaur were also left waiting for him at the gurdwara, after which they came back home. “I don’t want to comment Capt Amarinder Singh’s statement. It is his (Amarinder) line of thought but we don’t want to join the issue,” said Kundan Singh.
Earlier, Sajjan was accorded a warm welcome by the villagers from the entrance gate of the village upto the gurdwara.
At the gurdwara, Kamaljit Singh Bhupa, the district president of All India Saini Sewa Samaj was seen requesting the gathering to abstain from raising any kind of ‘slogans’. Bhupa kept reminding the gathering that the only slogans to be raised were ‘Jo Bole so Nihal’.
Meanwhile, Canadian Defence Minister also paid a visit to ‘Unique Home’, a girl’s orphanage run by Parkash Kaur. Unique Home was supported by Mamta Foundation of Canada based at British Columbia province. Sajjan spent a good time with the girl, playing and sharing light moments. He urged Punjabis to respect women in the society.
