After almost spending a year in hibernation, Rio Games bronze medallist Sakshi Malik has entered the final of the Asian Championship. Competing in the 60kg category Sakshi Malik assured herself of a silver medal after reaching the final at the Asian Wrestling Championship in New Delhi on Friday.
Sakshi will face Olympic gold medallist Japan’s Risako Kawai in the final.
Sakshi became the first Indian female wrestler to win a medal at the Olympics when she clinched the bronze in the 58 kg category at Rio Games.
In the absence of some of the leading grapplers such as Yogeshwar Dutt, Sunil Kumar and the famous Phogat sisters — Geeta and Babita — the onus will be on the likes of Sakshi, Olympian Sandeep Tomar and Bajrang Punia to help India improve on its last year’s performance at the showpiece event.
