Sarbat Khalsa announces Gurdwara management reform movement in Punjab.Akal Takht acting Jathedar Dhian Singh Mand announced to begin gurdwara management reform movement from June 22 in the state Blaming the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandak Committee (SGPC) and the Akal Takht jathedar of failing to raise voice against sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, Sarbat Khalsa appointee and acting jathedar of Akal Takht Dhian Singh Mand on Monday announced to start ‘Gurdwara Management Reform Movement’ in Punjab. Mand said that till date around 200 sacrilege cases have taken place in the state but neither the previous Akali government nor the incumbent Capt Amarinder Singh led congress government took action against the culprits.
The acting jathedar of Akal Takth, who was accompanied by Sant Baljit Singh Daduwal, the jathedar of Takth Damdama Sahib and others said that the gurdwara management reform movement would be started in all the gurdwaras including the historic and the local ones in the districts, towns and even localities. The first such congregation would be held at Ferozepur on June 22.
Addressing a press conference, Mand said that had the SGPC and the Akal Takth raised voice against serious Sikh issues, the situation of youth falling prey to drugs would not have been that alarming today. “Repeated incident of sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib and the Gutkas have hurt the sentiments of not just Sikhs but the Punjabis. Sikh youth turning ‘Patit’ and falling prey to drugs was a major cause of concern and gurdwaras have a big role to play in this”, he said.
He maintained that now, the Sarbat Khalsa has decided to reach out to the ‘Granthis’ and the ‘Pathis’ of all the gurdwaras and hear the problems faced by them. The acting jathedar of Akal Takth said that Capt Amarinder Singh has announced to take action against those behind the sacrilege incidents but four months have passed and nothing was done. “We have no hopes from this government, hence the decision to initiate state wide gurdwara reform movement”, he added..
“He also mentioned that how SGPC and the Akal Takht ended up as a mute spectator” Mand also sought support from all the Sikh bodies, federation and the alike groups to join hands with Sarbat Khalsa appointee jathedars to make this campaign a success. He said that apart from other core Sikh issues, they would also raise work on Amrit Sanchar, stopping drugs abuse, dowry culture and social reforms.
Further, he also highlighted that the Sarbat Khalsa would work to bring dalits into the mainstream of gurdwara managements. “Both the SGPC and the Akal Takth failed to keep dalits along whereas Sri Guru Granth Sahib was full of preachings of Guru Ravidass and other dalit saints”, he said.
He also mentioned that how SGPC and the Akal Takht ended up as a mute spectator during the Vienna Riots in 2009 and the Gurdwara Talhan Sahib incident in Jalandhar. “It was a fight of existence of dalits but both the supreme Sikh bodies failed in performing their duties”, he added.
