Chandigarh:Nabha jail break case is first of its kind that took place in Punjab. The gangsters, mind you and not the terrorists, succeeded in escaping with 6 prisoners, including one terrorist Harminder Singh alias Mintoo of the Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF).
The sensational jail break, at 9 am sharp, rattled the state government and the police. The incident gains importance as elections to the state Assembly are due in 2017 February. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance could ill afford it at this time. The
opposition parties viewed the incident as the failure of the government and intelligence agencies.
The Jail break incident provided ample strength to the charge that law and order situation in Punjab was not good enough. The Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) yelled seeking resignation of the Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal who is also the home minister.
The charge is valid but the manner in which the police worked after the incident is commendable. They arrested Harminder Singh Mintoo a day after the escape. They also arrested Parminder Singh alias Pinda with the help of Uttar Pradesh police. The FIR which initially mentioned only 8 accused now has a total of 23 suspects who were yet to be arrested.
The alacrity with which investigation is progressing is satisfying and lends credibility to the home minister-cum-Dy CM Sukhbir Badal. The formation of Special Investigation Team (SIT) under Inspector General Paramraj Umranangal’s leadership produced quick results. Known for his astute policing the IG has made the SIT stronger by inducting four junior police officers in the team.
The Opposition could not exploit the jail break incident to its benefit as the police was prompt and produced results. The Opposition previously could not harness the SYL issue as the SAD gave the impression, through the media, that it was the only protector of river waters of Punjab. AAP could not match the Akali decibel so could not the Congress. Both, Congress and AAP did not match ferocity of the Akali campaign.
The Akali workers down the line started a whisper campaign that the SYL imbroglio was now in the court of President of India, Parnab Mukherjee who belongs to the Congress. Punjab ministers were forcefully feeding the public that it was the now the Congress which is to decide about of river waters of Punjab. Very cleverly, they concealed the fact that the President of India has to abide by the advice given by the Union Cabinet which is headed by Narendra Modi of the BJP.
The cacophony on jail break was hijacked by the SAD leaving the Opposition on the back seat. It seems that with each passing day something or the other was acting in favour of the SAD-BJP alliance which seems to have improved its electoral chances over the past 2 months. However, there are yet 3 months for the elections and Election Commission of India has yet to announce the dates. By the time dates are declared the political scenario is bound to take various turns and twists.
