Samana:Known as a backward assembly constituency area, Samana is heading to witness multi-cornered contest during the ensuing assembly elections in the state. Even as all the major political parties have announced their candidates for this seat, yet the Congress is still in doldrums to select its candidate as Punjab Congress’ Vice-President Laal Singh has been pushing the party high command to a corner by demanding the party ticket for his son Rajinder Singh.
While the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal has selected it’s trusted warhorse sitting MLA and Punjab Water Supplies, Sanitation and Languages Minister Surjit Singh Rakhra to contest election from here as its Rakhra’s fourth term to face the voters but this time he seems to be confident because of his works undertaken in this area especially in rural belt.
So far, Rakhra has already completed first round of his poll campaign and besides him, his poll campaign is being handled by his younger brother Charanjit Singh Rakhra.
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has also thrown its hat in the poll exercise and has come forward with its candidate as it gave ticket to Devinder Singh Dhiman. Dhiman is going to contest his first election from here and he is having very less experience in comparison to others.
On the other side, the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) also fielded its candidate in shape of Ranjit Singh Fatehgarh Channa. Channa is having good base in the rural areas of this constituency as he has worked in the area. Channa along with the party’s candidate from Shutrana (reserve) assembly seat Amarjit Singh Marouri on Sunday paid obeseince when they went to a Gurdwara in Samana.
The party’s district president Saroop Singh Sandha said that the party is going to the voters to seek votes on the basis of waging war against drugs and corruption.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s candidate Jagtar Singh Rajla even though had started his poll campaign much earlier, but he has failed to generate much-needed heat till date. The main reason for it is Rajla’s frequent changing of political parties. Rajla is the son of slain SAD leader Hardyal Singh Rajla. Hardyal Singh Rajla was a close confidant of former SGPC chief late Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra and even sacrificed his life for Tohra in an attack near Ludhiana.
After the death of his father Jagtar Singh Rajla through the Tohra camp got SAD ticket in 1997 and got elected as an MLA from here but after the death of Jathedar Tohra, he failed to improve his relationship with the SAD supremo and Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and later on after accusing the Badals, he left the party and joined the Congress and played a key role when Capt Amarinder Singh’s son Raninder Singh contested election from here. But again he failed to carry forward his relations with the royal family and just a few months back, left the Congress and joined AAP. Fortunately for him, he succeeded in impressing AAP’s Central leadership and got party ticket in the first list of the candidates announced in September.
