7 Pune institutes drop university tag: Now, Symbiosis fallen into line and has dropped the university tag from its name. It comes a day after the University Grants Commission (UGC) had sent a final warning notice to seven institutes, asking them either to drop the tag of ‘university’ from their names or risk losing their deemed university status. Complying with the UGC directive, Dr Vidya Yeravdekar, principal director at Symbiosis, said that the institute has written to the UGC stating that it would be called Symbiosis International (Deemed University) henceforth.“We have no other option… otherwise, they will withdraw the deemed university status. They issued the notice to many deemed universities. A group of these universities have moved the Supreme Court, requesting a stay on the order… the case comes up for hearing tomorrow. Since the deadline is 4 pm today, we wrote to the UGC, saying that we will change our name to ‘Symbiosis International (Deemed University)… but if there is a stay on this notification, then they should allow us to revert to our original name,” said Yeravdekar, the Indian Express reported. The institute was earlier named the Symbiosis International University.Even Chandigarh-based PEC University of Technology and Bengaluru’s Christ University have rechristened themselves after the UGC pulled them up for including “university” in their names despite their deemed to be varsity status. The PEC University of Technology has decided to switch back to its former name Punjab Engineering College and the Christ University has decided to use “Christ”. The UGC had in October pulled up 123 institutions of higher education, which are deemed to be universities, for using “university” in their names and directed them to change the nomenclature within a month.The move came after the Supreme Court had on November 3 directed the UGC to stop deemed-to-be universities from using the word ‘university’ in their names. BIT-Mesra in Ranchi, Christ University, Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies in Mumbai, Symbiosis International University in Pune, BITS-Pilani, Indian Veterinary Research Institute in Uttar Pradesh’s Izzatnagar, Graphic Era University in Dehradun and Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya, Haridwar are among the 123 institutes pulled up by the UGC.7 Pune institutes drop university tag. The institutions which have been sent the directive are Manipal University, Delhi-based Indian Agricultural Research Institute (Pusa), Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences, Jamia Hamdard, the National Dairy Research Institute in Karnal and the Forest Research Institute in Dehradun.
