The Punjab government is suffering loss of several crores every month in form of Advertisement Tax as Ludhiana Municipal Corporation has failed to take any action against illegal hoardings dotting the city. Only 12 sites have been approved by MC for hoardings throughout the entire city, despite that hundreds of illegal hoardings are visible in every corner.
Moreover, the advertisement mafia is minting money by not removing the hoardings for several months for which money is deposited for a month. MC has failed to take action against erring people and remove illegal hoardings.
Last month, Navjot Singh Sidhu himself has admitted that the exchequer is suffering loss of crores but despite the orders of the minister, advertisement mafia is continuing to spread its wings in the city.
According to MC records 12 sites of 30×15 size have been approved in Ludhiana city. Interestingly, illegal hoardings are visible in electronics market and Mata Rani chowk, opposite MC office. The hoardings were banned on the shops and the shop owners were asked to mention name of their shop. Ironically, the advertisement of mobile companies and others can be seen at every third shop in each market. In 2009, the court had ordered Ludhiana MC to remove advertisements outside shops and maintain the records of advertisement hoardings. Though there is a provision of imposing penalty of Rs 50, 000 but MC all these years has avoided to punish the guilty.

I have filed Public interest litigation (PIL) in Punjab and Haryana High Court and in 2010, the court directed MC to remove illegal hoardings and maintain records of challans. Will remove hoardings within a weekThe MC has challaned hundreds of defaulters. In last few months 350 challans have been issued in Zone -D. We have formed a committee and will start action to remove illegal hoardings as early as next week.
Advertisement branch officials hardly transferred
The officials of advertisement branch mainly superintended HS Dalla has not been transferred from last many years. According to information, HS Dalla is serving in advertisement wing from seven years. The role of Dalla also comes under scanner as he failed to take action against violators.
