Narinder Jagga: Punjab MC polls : Elections be held in two phases in December and January. The state government of Punjab has given a green signal to Municipal Corporations and Council elections. These elections will be held in two phases. Elections to 32 municipal councils and three municipal corporations, Patiala, Jalandhar and Amritsar will be held in December, while the Ludhiana MC will witness polls will in the second phase in January next year. The announcement of election dates is expected to be made by the Punjab State Election Commission in the second or third week of November. The state government held a special meeting in this regard on Thursday. The deadline of the serving period of mayors of the 32 councils and the four corporations expired in the month of September. Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) had mayors in Patiala and Ludhiana, while BJP had mayors in Amritsar and Jalandhar. Although the government was seen announcing MC elections, but the congressional victory of the Gurdaspur parliamentary by-election and the defeat of the BJP-SAD and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has given Congress much needed boost. During the ten years of the previous government, these elections were held at the right time. According to the information, the Congress is in the process of preparing for these elections before any sort of anti-government protest. One day ago, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh also held separate meetings with his local administration and Punjab State Election Commission officials. Punjab Congress President Sunil Jakhar also appealed to Chief Minister to convene the corporation and the Council for early elections.
According to the information, a record of 20 municipal councils has been completed and the work of the ward has been completed, while the details of the remaining 12 municipal councils will be ready by Monday. Details of three municipal corporations – Patiala, Jalandhar and Amritsar have been prepared, but due to the incomplete documentation of Ludhiana, the elections got delayed. It is worth mentioning that these elections are being held with 50 percent women reservation. The ruling Congress has started preparing for these elections. The party is going to post incharges within two or three days to select candidates for the elections. The name of the candidate will be fixed only after MLA’s recommendation and inclination of incharge. According to party sources, the name of the candidates will be announced only after the election is notified.
