On Ambedkar Jayanti, grants, waiver for Dalits. At the state-level Ambedkar jayanti function here on Saturday, Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh made a slew of announcements to appease the SC community. He announced a grant of Rs 20 crore for pending work for Guru Ravidass Memorial in Hoshiarpur, besides Rs 6 crore for the completion of Ambedkar Bhawan in Ludhiana. On the demand of MLA Sushil Rinku, the CM announced a new degree college in SC-dominated Buta Mandi, Jalandhar. He said Dr BR Ambedkar Chair would be revived at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, while pointing fingers at Akalis for allowing it to lapse. During the function, the CM gave debt waiver certificates worth up to Rs 50,000 each to SC beneficiaries who had taken loan from the Punjab Scheduled Castes Land Development and Finance Corporation and the Punjab Backward Classes Land Development and Finance Corporation. He said that while Rs 45.41 crore had been waived for 14,260 beneficiaries in the first category, another 1,630 beneficiaries had benefitted to the tune of Rs 6.59 crore in the second category. The Punjab CM directed the Congress MPs from the state to fight in Parliament to ensure that the SC/ST Act was not diluted.
