Congress candidate Harminder Singh Jassi’s SUV got badly damaged but he escaped unhurt
Bathinda: Three persons including a young boy were killed and over a dozen sustained injuries during a blast which took place in a car at Maur Mandi of the district on Tuesday evening. Various vehicles were also damaged in the incident that occurred when the Congress candidate Harminder Singh Jassi just boarded his SUV after addressing a public rally in the nearby area. During the preliminary investigation, police officials found the blast took place through remote controlled. It is also learnt that there were two bombs installed, one of which was fitted in the car and the second one was put in a pressure cooker and left out of the car. Police have recovered some device meant to be used in explosion from the spot.
Jassi is the former minister and he maintains his significance in the party more for his family relationship with Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim, who has lakhs of followers in Malwa belt of the state. As the Dera head and his family members were under severe threat since he courted controversy in 2007, the Ministry of Home Affairs had also declared Jassi a protectee and he was provided with over a dozen security guards from the Centre.
As the three killed were badly injured, their identity couldn’t be ascertained, till the filing of news item. Immediately after learning about the happening, Inspector General of Police Nilabh Kishore along with his team including DIG Yurinder Hayer and SSP Swapan Sharma rushed to the spot and launched investigation. DC Ghanshyam Thori and various civil officials also reached the place. It is learnt that administration had also called the forensic science experts to carry out a detailed probe.
In the incident Jassi’s SUV Toyota Fortuner got badly damaged and the impact was so high that the vehicle lost its tyres. However, Jassi was safe, informed Vikram Kumar, who was driving Jassi’s vehicle when the blast took place. Vikram claimed that there were two blasts which took place immediately after the Jassi boarded the SUV, bearing registration number PB03 AC 9696. The car, which was used for blast, was reportedly an unclaimed one and it was carrying the plate bearing registration number PB05C 8973. The Maruti 800 car got split in two parts in the blast. A Bullet motorcycle bearing number PB 03 5050 also got damaged in the incident.
The injured were rushed to different hospitals in Bathinda and Maur. About six, having serious injuries, were referred to DMCH Ludhiana from Bathinda, as learnt. The identity of all of the injured was also being ascertained.
