New Delhi: Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) president Amit Shah surprised over the political reactions over the demonetisation. While addressing the media, Shah said that he can’t understand why several leaders would oppose it. “Can’t understand reaction of Mayawati, Mulayam, Rahul Gandhi and Arvind Kejriwal on notes ban,” Shah said during a press briefing on Friday.
Appealing to the common people to bear with the initial difficulties to “weed out black money from economy”, he questioned the political leaders’ commitment to do the same. “Whether you are for or against black money, terror funded by fake notes,” Shah said, specifically calling out the Delhi CM saying, “Arvind Kejriwal make clear whether you support weeding out black money.”
Attacking the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who slammed the demonetisation as “draconian”, the BJP president said, “I know Mamata Banerjee opposed the move, but politicians shouldn’t join rank of black marketeers, drug dealers who are upset.”
Dismissing that the government’s decision is politically motivated, Shah said, “Government made the move to clear black money. That is why there will be 200% penalty. This decision has nothing to do with polls.” With the Modi government decision coming just months before assembly elections in several states, the timing of the cash clean-up has been questioned. Hitting out at Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati, Shah said, “This is economic emergency for BSP” ahead of Uttar Pradesh polls.
Responding to a question whether senior BJP leaders were informed about the demonetisation, Shah said, “Nobody except those in constitutional and administrative posts knew about decision beforehand.”
