Ludhiana: In what comes as another blow to the agencies tasked with keeping unscrupulous elements under check, some assailants on Saturday night shot Amit Sharma, 35, leader of Hindu Takht, in Ludhiana city, Punjab’s business hub. Police sources said Amit died on the spot. They said that four unidentified motorcycle riders shot Amit near Durga Mata Mandir, Jagraon bridge. Police have launched a massive manhunt to nab the culprits. Senior police officials immediately rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation.

Earlier the city was rocked when unidentified assailants killed Mata Chand Kaur, 84-year old wife of a former Namdhari sect chief Satguru Jagjit Singh. Kaur was shot dead by two unidentified assailants at Bhaini Sahib near Ludhiana in April last year. Now the CBI has taken over the probe from the Punjab Police into the killing of Chand Kaur along with two others. Last year in August, Punjab’s senior RSS leader Brig Jagdish Gagneja (retd), 65, considered the main architect of RSS in the state, was shot at by two masked motorcyclists in Jalandhar. The attackers had followed Gagneja and his wife in their car from their residence at Deep Nagar in Jalandhar Cantonment.
