Chandigarh: The Nabha jailbreak case is turning out to be a handy work of gangsters and has nothing to do with Pakistan.
This information was passed on to The Daily Post by a senior member of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) who interrogated the arrested suspects at CIA office in Patiala on Wednesday.
He disclosed that the attackers did not know about the identity of the sixth person, who later identified as Khalistan activist. The attackers had executed a daring broad day light operation to get 5 imprisoned gangsters released. It was only later that Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) Chief Harminder Singh alias Mintoo’s identity came to light when the attackers conferred with their rescued members. All the rescued prisoners including Mintoo dispersed in various directions. None of the five gangsters has been arrested till date.
The officer denied any role of ‘hawala’ money in the entire operation. The money used to come from the relatives of the prisoners and gangsters.
Some media reports had claimed that the Inter-Services-Intelligence (ISI) of Pakistan was the agency behind planning and financing jail break on Sunday.
An Inspector General of the Punjab police confided on condition of anonymity that the sweet meat shop keeper Tejinder Sharma arrested yesterday along with an assistant superintendent of prison Bhim Singh and a head warder Jagjit Singh were working as couriers for the prisoners. Tejinder Sharma used to accept money from the relatives of the prisoners and passed it on to Bhim Singh for onward transfer to the prisoners. The sweet meat shop is located bang opposite the entrance of the high security jail which houses hardened criminals and convicted terrorists.
Sharma has been facilitating supply of heroin, an intoxicant, liquor, sim-cards and other items of prisoners’ choice. He shared the money which came as commission, with Bhim Singh and the head warder Jagjit Singh. The inmates were also provided with Skype facility on the internet through smart phones. The gangsters were maintaining their pages on the Face Book with the help provided by the jail staff.
The IG said that Mintoo was friendly with the gangsters lodged in the jail and had tagged himself with them in the escape vehicle.
Interestingly, a senior Punjab politician had alleged on Sunday that the jail break was executed at the behest of Pakistan. He had ascribed the incident to the ISI.
It is learnt that police have arrested two more suspects including a tea vendor who operated from the outside the jail boundary.
