The mayoral election, scheduled for Friday will be a litmus test for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), since both Rajesh Kalia, party’s official candidate and Satish Kainth, the rebel councillor who has filed nomination for the post as an Independent candidate, will fight for the top post.Interestingly, unlike last year when Asha Jaswal had withdrawn her nomination filed against party’s official candidate Davesh Moudgil , this time the rebel councillor not just refused to budge, but is very confident that he will win the elections by getting votes through crossing voting.
Kainth, who has already got support from Independent candidate Dalip Sharma, said, “I am not going to withdraw my nominations at any cost. Also i know many BJP councillors do not want to want a tainted image perosn to get the mayor post and are certainly going to vote for me.”‘On Thursday, organization secretary Dinesh Kumar, Member Parliament Kiron Kher and state general secretary Chander Shekhar held a meeting with all the BJP councillors. However, Kainth even missed the meeting called by the party leaders and till evening the party leaders kept trying to persuade him to change his decision. The meeting which was held at party office, BJP leaders reiterated that party nominee Rajesh Kalia will win the election with full majority.
They further said that there are no differences between any party councillors now and the party will win all municipal corporation posts. With this the BJP councillor from ward number of Chandigarh, Farmila Devi, who was one of the candidates for the mayor post and had supported the rebel councillor, also issued a written statement saying that in a moment of emotion signed on the nomination of rebel BJP leader Satish Kainth but her vote in the upcoming mayoral elections would go only to the party nominee Rajesh Kalia.Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the BJP in an official statement said that some people are intentionally circulating malicious propaganda against Rajesh Kalia started after he was nominated as Mayor candidate and all these issues were never raised by anybody when he contested election of councillor from ward number 7, in year 2016.
