Chandigarh: For the families of 29- year- old Varsha Sharma, resident of Hamirpur, HP and 21-year- old Gandhi Mahatoo, from Derabassi, Punjab, August 31 turned to be most tragic day, as both the families lost their young daughter and son in accidents.
Both the deceased who were admitted at PGI impacted eight lives of people were on waiting list of organ transplant at PGI. Showcasing exemplary courage and magnanimity, families of both Varsha Sharma and Gandhi Mahatoo consented for organ donation after the transplant coordinators raised the matter with them.
Following their consent, kidneys and corneas were retrieved from both the deceased which through transplantation gave second lease of life to four patients battling for survival and gave sight to another four patients.
On August 27, Varsha Sharma at his residence had suddenly fallen from height while plucking vegetables and after which she was rushed to local hospital from where she was referred to PGI.
However, despite the efforts of attending doctors, Varsha Sharma succumbed to her injuries and was declared brain dead on August 31.
Likewise, on August 26, Gandhi Mahatoo, a 3rd year BCA student from Chandigarh University, was walking on the side of a road in Derabassi, when he was hit from behind by a recklessly driven car.
He was immediately rushed to Civil Hospital, Derabassi from where he was shifted to GMCH, Sector 32 and was then shifted to PGI on August 28. Mahatoo was declared brain dead on August 31.
