Chandigarh: The Engineering Department of Chandigarh Administration has removed 21 utility poles which were in the middle of cycle-cum-pedestrian track from the Grain Market roundabout to the Sector 28 roundabout. The news was published by the Daily Post ‘21 electric poles in the middle of cycle-cum-pedestrian track pose danger,’ had drawn the attention of the department. No cyclist or pedestrian dared to cycle on the newly constructed cycle tracks because there were power poles in the middle of the track.
The Chadigarh Administration in order to ‘save’ cyclists and pedestrians had constructed cycle tracks along various roads across the city. But reality check told a different story. No uniformity was seern in all these tracks which have been non-functional.
An official of the Engineering Department said that after publication of the news item, matter was moved for removal of these electric poles as the issue contained budgetary allocation. After necessary budget was allocated for the work, underground cable of 11,000 voltage has been laid and overhead high tension power supply along with utility poles has been removed.
He further said that power poles used to be on the side of the road but when the roads expanded on either side and included cycle-cum-pedestrian track, the power poles were left where these were. Because of these poles cyclists or pedestrian feared to use the track . “Removing the power poles was always a part of the cycle track expansion project,” he said and added that in other such cases across the city utility poles would be removed.
Removal of these poles destroyed the track and it will again need to be constructed thus a drain on public exchequer.
