Chandigarh: UT Administration has recently cleared the estimate of Rs 300 crore for the construction of cloverleaf flyover at Tribune Crossing. The budget allocation is followed after Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways announced for the clearance of the flyover. Later NHAI gave the clearance for construction of the flyover.
The Engineering Department of the UT Administration has already prepared the estimates and has sent for approval to Ministry of Roads, Transport and Highways, Government of India. The work is likely to start within eight months from now, said an engineering department officer.
Member of Parliament Kirron Kher has taken an initiative to solve the problem of traffic congestion at Tribune Chowk. She had written a letter to Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, and had strongly desired for a flyover or combination of flyover and underpass to be constructed at Tribune Chowk to reduce the traffic congestion.
After that, the UT Administration had asked its Engineering Department to explore the proposal for construction of cloverleaf type flyover to allow seamless traffic flow at Tribune Chowk junction, has already been designed by the consultant appointed for che purpose.
“We have prepared the estimates and have sent them for approval with Ministry of Roads, Transport and Highways, Government of India. The work on the flyover may be initiated by the mid of 2017. The entire cost for the construction of the flyover will be borne by the Centre,” said UT Engineering Department officer.
It may be mentioned that more than 2.5 lakh vehicles cross the Tribune Chowk every day. This, being the only entry and exit point for the traffic moving from Zirakpur, Ambala and parts of Punjab, the traffic snarls are witnessed at Tribune Chowk due to which the commuters have to waste more than 10 to 25 minutes to cross this Chowk.
