Chandigarh: UT Administration has introduced the payment through debit cards to encourage the cashless purchases of vegetables and fruits at various Apni and Kisan mandis being organised in city on Thursday.
The official spokesperson of Market Committee Chandigarh said that Deputy Commissioner, Chandigarh issued instructions to the Food and Supply Department, Manimajra Cooperative Society, Chandigarh and Market Committee, Chandigarh to redress the problems being faced by the common man while purchasing fruits and vegetables and grocery items of daily needs due to cash problem.
The Food Supply Department, Market Committee and Manimajra Co-operative Society Chandigarh stationed fruits, vegetables and grocery mobile vans with point on sale (POS) swipe machines (provided by HDFC) at EWS colony Dhanas, Maloya, Ramdarbar, Sector 34 (Mandi), Sector 39 (mandi) and Palsora for the purposes of cashless transaction and to redress the problems of procuring essential items being faced by the citizens due to cash flow.
Many citizens used plastic money to purchase vegetables and fruits. The department is also considering some discount to those purchasers who buy food items from their cards from the above outlets. However citizens and vendors will have the liberty to use both modes cash or electronic transaction.
