Chandigarh: SFS students led the protest against hike in examination fee on Tuesday. Classes were boycotted by students in some departments and around 400 students gathered at VC Office. Then after an unsuccessful meeting with VC, DUI, Deputy Registrar and Chief Security Officer, students marched to PU Gate no. 2. Gate was blocked for around two. But still when PU authorities didn’t give any response, students marched ahead and blocked the road outside Gate no. 2.
According to students, Police misbehaved with students and manhandled SFS president Daman. Even his clothes were torn by police. After intervention of DSP (Central), VC Arun Grover came out and talked to students where he promised that the last date to fill examnation fee will be extended. And the matter of hiked fee will be raised in the upcoming syndicate and senate also.
After this students ended Tuesday’s protest. SFS president Daman said, “As this hike is affecting students all around in colleges in Chandigarh and Punjab. We will take the movement to next level.
We will try to cordiante with organisations and students in these colleges. Also other sections of university, whether they be teachers or non-teaching employees, are suffering due to this non-availability of funds. We appeal all these sections to unite and fight for the common cause of university and education.” He further added, “The Centre and State governments are running away from their responsibility by slashing the funds from education. We will continously fight against the growing privatisation and commercialisation of education.”
More than hundred booked for rioting
The Chandigarh Police have booked more than hundred students for allegedly rioting and protesting at PU campus here on Tuesday.
Narinder Patial, SHO Police Station Sector 11 said we have booked 17 protestors by name and hundreds other under section 147 (Punishment for rioting), 149 (Every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object), 341 (Punishment for wrongful restraint), Section 188 of the CrPc (violation of DM directions), following the protest held at Sector 25.
The Police official said that they had video recording while protestors were protesting and creating nuisance outside the V-C office, as they did not have permission from the authority.
