Chandigarh: Congress party would win 18 seats in upcoming MC elections without support of the nominated councillors, said convener for MC elections for Chandigarh Asha Kumari. She said this while addressing the Congress convention at Congress Bhawan in Sector 35 on Saturday.
Asha Kumari, five times MLA from Dalhousie in Himachal Pardesh, said that Chandigarh is not new to her and she is also a part of it. “It was in 1966 when Punjab was divided and Himachal Pradesh was formed. Then Himachal Pradesh had privilege of 7.19 per cent share in Chandigarh and so here I am to serve you people. We will win with majority and if we get public support in full, we may secure all the 26 seats. And Congress will do this without the support of nominated councillors.”
She said that there is no division in Chandigarh Congress unit and only one leader is there that is Sonia Gandhi. “We don’t have any groupism in Chandigarh Congress as we have only one group under the leadership of Sonai Gandhi,” said Asha Kumari. She also said that the party tickets will only be given to winnable candidates. “We will ask them to prove their winnability before considering them eligible for candidature,” said Kumari.
Asha Kumari was accompanied by Harish Chaudhary, Secretary AICC, former MP and Union Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal, CPCC president Pardeep Chhabra, and other leading Congress supporters.
Party to announce it revival from UT: Harish Chaudhary
While addressing the Congress supporters, Harish Chaudhary said, “The time has come that Congress will announce its revival from Chandigarh. Congress is poised to sweep the MC elections which will send direct message to Narendra Modi and BJP that from now onwards the things are going to be tough for them. People have started discarding the BJP policies as Modi failed to live upto his promises.”
Manish Tewari is leader of Punjab state, not of UT
Asha Kumari while answering the query about division in Chandigarh Congress and Manish Tewari eyeing entry to Chandigarh, said, “Manish Tewari is a good politician but he belongs to Punjab state. Here in Chandigarh, the resident of Chandigarh who has worked at grassroot level will be the face of Congress.
