They were protesting against detention of Rahul Gandhi
Chandigarh: Former Member of Parliament and Union Railways Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal and Chandigarh Pradesh Congress Committee (CPCC) president Pardeep Chhabra among 150 Congress activists were arrested on Thursday. They were protesting against the detention of Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi.
While strongly condemning the incident of suicide by ex-serviceman Ram Kishan Grewal over not getting the benefits of the one-rank one-pension and later detaining Rahul Gandhi who wanted to meet the family members of the ex-serviceman, Chandigarh Congress held a strong protest against the BJP government.
The protest was led by former Union Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal and UT Congress president Pradeep Chhabra. It started from Congress Bhavan in Sector 35 with hundreds of workers participating in the protest who were raising slogans against the BJP government. They also paid tribute to Ram Kishan and raised slogans in his support. The police arrested Congress workers including Pawan Kumar Bansa and Pradeep Chhabra when they were trying to cross the police barricade at Sector 34.
Bansal said that the unfortunate incident of suicide committed by the ex-soldier has reflected the inhuman attitude of the BJP
government which did nothing for any category of the society. With the incident, the people could once again witness the anti-people face of the BJP government, he said.
Bansal said that a few days back when Rahul Gandhi had written to the BJP government to persuade the one-rank one-pension scheme, he was merely mocked at by the BJP leaders. He said that it was Rahul Gandhi who announced the one-rank one-pension scheme in Chandigarh itself and initiated its implementation during the tenure of the UPA government but the BJP government did not persuade it further and left it incomplete.
Chhabra said that it was unfortunate that under the patronage of the BJP government, the family members of the soldier were beaten up by the police and could not even reach the body of the ex-serviceman.
Chhabra said like Delhi, the Chandigarh Police had also arrested the Congress workers who were protesting peacefully. The arrested Congress activists were released later.
