Chandigarh: Pawan Kumar Bansal, former Member of Parliament from Chandigarh has urged the Government of India to immediately name the local airport as Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport Chandigarh and restore the operation of domestic flights from the modern terminal built at a huge cost at Chandigarh.
In a letter to Ashok Gajapathi Raju Pusapati, Minister of Civil Aviation on Friday, Bansal has said that the international terminal at Mohali with the existing runway in Chandigarh has been built through an SPV formed in 2008 with 51 per cent shareholding of Airport Authority of India and 24.5 per cent each of the States of Punjab and Haryana. Construction of a modern terminal building to replace the existing one at Chandigarh for domestic flights was also started then.
The naming of terminal at Mohali as Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport, Chandigarh has not materialised even after an inordinately long time but the Government of Punjab has rushed to unilaterally advertise it as International Airport, Mohali. Government of Haryana had undertaken to pay a heavy amount as stake in the joint venture to ensure that the Airport retained ‘Chandigarh’ as part of its name.
The new terminal building at the place of old one at Chandigarh itself has been abandoned altogether, thus wasting huge amount of public money that was spent on it by the AAI. If it was to be abandoned only after 3-4 years of its construction, huge expenditure could well have been avoided.
Bansal has also stressed upon for providing an access to the new terminal at Mohali from Chandigarh city through a short underpass connecting the two terminals.
