Chandigarh: Calls of bomb scare reported at three separate locations at separate timings put the police force, health and fire on toes in Chandigarh on Friday, however later it was confirmed to be a mock drill.
Taking serious concern over the Uri attack in Jammu and Kashmir, the Chandigarh Police on Friday conducted three massive mock drills to check the preparedness of the Police force and the staff of Health Department.
The mock drills were conducted at Police Lines Sector 26 at around 8.30 am, Government Museum and Art Gallery, Sector 10 at around 12.30 pm and then at Chandigarh Club at Sector 1 at around 2.30 pm.
More than 200 police personnel were on the job and the alerts were sounded through Chandigarh Police Control room. According to the sources, bomb threat mock exercises was conducted at three places to check the level of preparedness of the Police, Health and Fire Departments.
Sources said that at around 8:30 am, the Police Control Room received a call intimating them of a bomb placed in the lines.Following the call, the concerned officials were then alerted by the Police Control Room about the threat. The message was passed on to the Bomb Threat Assessment Committee as well.After the announcement made about the bomb threat, people present in the area were evenly asked to evacuate the area and move to a safe distance.
The concerned officials reached the spot immediately and traced the ‘bomb’ in the police lines and carried out the requisite drill. Meanwhile, the bomb disposal squad of Chandigarh Police immediately began the detection process at the lines as soon as it reached the site. They also reached the spot for defusing the ‘bomb’.
A police official said that the exercises were conducted to check the response time of different wings of Police Department including the staff of GMSH-16, PGI and GMCH-33. Meanwhile, the Operations Cell, crime branch, bomb disposal squad were also part of the mock drill.
