Chandigarh: Despite ban on an open burning of garbage waste by National Green Tribunal (NGT), for the residents of Indira Colony, it has become a matter of daily routine. Garbage collectors of the area throw the garbage waste and set it on fire that leads to harmful smoke creating problems among commuters and people walking through the area.
It seems that both the Municipal Corporation (MC) and the contract-based company, responsible for management of the garbage waste in the area, are unable to find a solution to the problem of burning waste.
The local Municipal Corporation has installed many dumpers in the area so that people could make their use rather than disposing garbage waste in an open land. “The dumping area near Indira Colony comes under Haryana but cleanliness is maintained by MC Chandigarh. As it’s a border area of two cities, we clean the area with the help of JCB machines to avoid piling up of garbage but private garbage collectors again put the garbage on the land,” said Sanitary Inspector Darshan Singh.
