Chandigarh Paddy is the main culprit of depleting underground water and it is also the main culprit of the farmers’ suicides in the state. The phenomenon of suicides by farm labourers and farmers in Punjab is relatively new as prior to 2000 there were hardly any suicides by farmers, said Dr Ranjit Singh Ghuman, Professor of Economics and former Chairman of the Minimum Support Price panel of Punjab.
S h a r i n g comprehensive details from the survey conducted by his team, he said that in fact it is the outcome of Green Revolution which was initiated in 1966, went very well till the 90s . But in the mid-90s the problem started with the stagnation of yield per hectare. The major Green Revolution crops were paddy and wheat. Whereas the cost of cultivation did not stagnant, rather it kept on increasing. So the increasing cost, stagnating yield and relatively a low Minimum Support Price were the major issues, along with pressure of workforce on land and it led to the shrinkage of net income of the farmers’ household.
