Chandigarh: City Railway Station will attain the world class railway station tag by 2019. This was stated by Northern railways General Manager R K Kulshreshta during the inspection visit at Chandigarh Railway Station on Saturday.
The Railways Engineering Department officials also gave the presentation to the general manager on various ongoing projects at the Railway Station.
Kulshreshta said, “We are poised to make the Chandigarh Railway Station a world class by 2019. The projects are being prepared to bring it at international standards. UT Administration has approved a concept plan for the “redevelopment” of 500 acres of railway land.”
During past two years, Railways have spent around Rs 30 crore on the developmental projects at Chandigarh Railway Station whereas there has been just 4 per cent increase in the footfall of the passengers, said Kulshreshta, General Manager Northern Railways.
Railways have been spending more for the comfort of the passengers but in the passage of time, it has become funds-starved resulting in many projects getting delayed.
While commenting upon the presentation seen on developing world class railway station and double laning of the Dappar-Chandigarh tracks, Kulshreshta said that feasibility report of the semi-high speed corridor is being studied and soon Chandigarh will be connected to semi-high speed corridor.
However, the general manager did decline the aspect of converting Mohali Railway Station on world class standards as he said that it is not viable.
The Centre has chosen the Chandigarh Railway Station as one of the five railway stations being upgraded to international standards. Indian Railway Station Development Corporation Limited (IRSDC), in consultation with a German consultant, prepared the concept plan for the 500-odd acres of railway land in Chandigarh for its redevelopment.
He said, “The plan has been prepared on the pattern of an international airport. For instance, there will be a bank, a food court, cloak rooms and a VIP waiting lounge. Emphasis would be laid on providing all facilities to passengers at the station. Commuters will not have to hunt for such places around the city,” said Kulshreshta.
The plan, in addition to providing state-of-the-art international facilities to passengers, will also generate employment as a modern signalling equipment factory will be set up on 10 acres.
The main approach road to the railway station will be widened.
For the convenience of the public, an underpass has been proposed, which will link the existing alternative route from the Industrial Area, Phase I, and the road coming from Panchkula between Sector 17 and 18. The underpass will also ease traffic on the Chandigarh-Kalka route.
Bansal had made announcement
In 2013, former Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal had made an announcement that Chandigarh would be developed as a world-class station where state-of-the-art facilities would be provided.
