Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Police may have all claims of providing a safe city, especially for women, but the records of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reveal that Chandigarh ranks ‘second’ comparing to other seven union territories (UTs) in India concerning the crime against the women. Going by the data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), a total of 463 cases were registered in Chandigarh concerning crime against the women.
Though the Chandigarh Police have been making special arrangements for safety and security of women and children in the city who need special attention, but the efforts have not been able to cater to a safer environment to the group. As per NCRB reports, Delhi has been ranked the top most unsafe UT in India in crimes against women and children with 17104 cases in which women were the victims.
The records of NCRB reveal that in 2015, a total 463 cases of crime against women were registered in Chandigarh.
Out of the 463 cases registered at different police stations in the city, 165 cases were of kidnappings and abductions, 102 cases of molestation and obscene act with an intention to outrage modesty, 78 cases of rapes, 10 cases of sexual harassment, five cases of dowry deaths, while total 126 pertaining cases were registered of cruelty by their husbands or his relatives.
Meanwhile, till August 17 this year, more than 58 women and girls have been reportedly abducted who were below 18 year-old and above 18 year-old, while a total 37 rape cases with girls have also been registered, and 18 cases registered under Protection of Child from sexual Offence Act 2012 are also added to the list.
Meanwhile, Andaman and Nicobar islands being on the third place had 136 cases of crime against women registered in 2015.
